Andrew Stanton reflects on the renewed interest in John Carter
Andrew Stanton has spoken about the renewed online attention surrounding his 2012 film John Carter. He acknowledged that the movie has gradually found appreciation years after its release.
During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the filmmaker-animator addressed the ongoing online discussion about the film. Stanton was told that John Carter has increasingly been reevaluated on the internet. He reacted with surprise when the topic was raised. “Has it?” he said, laughing.
After the interviewer mentioned that posts and articles about the film continue to circulate online, Stanton shared that the topic often comes up during his work on other productions. “This always happens at least once on every set. We’ll be about to roll, and a grip will whisper to me, ‘John Carter.’ And I always say to them, ‘You don’t have to whisper anymore,'” he said.
The conversation then turned to how Stanton feels when he hears these delayed compliments about the film. “I firmly believe there was always that audience. We just didn’t understand that, and we didn’t cater to them [in whatever way]; it got overlooked. But it’s nice to know there was an audience for it, and that it’s founded.”
Stanton also reflected on how creative works can find new audiences long after their release. “The nice thing about finishing a piece of creative work — whether it’s a book or an album or a movie — is that it’s there for people to find for the rest of time. Unless it’s banned, it can’t be stopped.”
Directed by Stanton, the film John Carter stars Taylor Kitsch in the lead role. The film premiered in theaters on March 9, 2012.
