Cast Away leaves Netflix in April
Cast Away, starring Tom Hanks and directed by Robert Zemeckis, is reportedly leaving Netflix on April 7, 2026, joining other departing movies, A Simple Lie, Piece by Piece, and Holy Spider.
The film was released in the United States on December 22, 2000. At the time of its release, it grossed $429.6 million at the box office against a $90 million budget. When adjusted for inflation, the figure amounts to $811.4 million in 2026.
Consequently, the movie became the third-highest-grossing theatrical release of the year, surpassed only by Mission: Impossible 2 and Ridley Scott’s Gladiator.
The story follows Chuck Noland, a FedEx systems analyst and troubleshooter. He lives with his girlfriend, Kelly, whom he plans to marry. However, this struggles to come to fruition as the nature of his work frequently keeps him away from her, causing some friction in their relationship. One day, while en route to Malaysia for a job, the plane Chuck is in crashes into the Pacific Ocean, stranding him on a deserted island. Soon, he finds himself locked in a struggle to survive, during which he picks up skills like fire-starting and spearfishing.
The film has performed well on review aggregator websites. It boasts 88% certified fresh critical and healthy 84% audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, on Metacritic, it holds a Metascore of 74 and a user score of 7.9 — both pointing to “generally favorable” reception.
In addition to directing the film, Zemeckis co-produced it with Hanks, Jack Rapke, and Steve Starkey. Meanwhile, William Broyles Jr. wrote the screenplay.
Apart from Hanks as Chuck Noland, Cast Away stars Helen Hunt, Paul Sanchez, Lari White, Nick Searcy, and Michael Forest, among others.
