While speaking to ScreenRant, the author shared that he is already deep into writing his next novel. However, he is keeping most of the details under wraps for now. Weir confirmed one thing fans can count on: the upcoming book will stay in the science-fiction lane that readers expect from him. At the same time, he explained that the story will not connect to any of his earlier works.

When the conversation turned to a possible follow-up to Project Hail Mary, Andy Weir suggested that the idea has crossed his mind. Fans have asked about a sequel plenty of times. Still, the author admitted he does not have a solid concept yet. Weir explained that he has a few small ideas floating around. However, none of them feel “strong enough” to build a full story.

He stated, “I know, I know, and many have pointed that out, but I don’t feel like I have anything strong enough to run with yet… Hopefully, in time, I’ve got bits and pieces of good ideas for sequels, but not enough to run with. If I’m going to sequel it, I want it to be good.”

If Andy Weir eventually writes a follow-up to Project Hail Mary, it could also pave the way for another movie. Hollywood usually waits for the source material first. So, a new novel would likely serve as the launchpad for a potential film sequel, especially if the upcoming adaptation performs well at the box office.
