New Milla Jovovich Movie’s RT Score Is Worse Than Most Resident Evil Movies
Milla Jovovich’s latest action film has landed with a rough start among critics. Early reviews on Rotten Tomatoes show a score even lower than most entries in her long-running Resident Evil series.
Protector reviews and Rotten Tomatoes score match most Resident Evil movies
Critics have not responded well to Jovovich’s new action thriller titled Protector. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently holds a 20% Tomatometer score from professional critics, signaling largely negative reviews.
Audience reactions are slightly better but still mixed, with a 58% Popcornmeter score. The gap suggests casual viewers found some entertainment value, but critics largely dismissed the film.
The film follows Nikki, a decorated former war hero whose life spirals into chaos after her daughter is abducted by sex traffickers. Desperate to save her child, she dives into a violent criminal underworld.
At the same time, both the police and military begin hunting her down. The story centers on Nikki’s relentless attempt to rescue her daughter while surviving the dangerous network she’s forced to confront.
Interestingly, the critical score sits below most movies in the Resident Evil series, which also starred Jovovich in the lead role as Alice. The original Resident Evil holds a 36% Tomatometer, while Resident Evil: Apocalypse sits at 18%.
Resident Evil: Extinction earned 24%, followed by Resident Evil: Afterlife at 21%. Later entries, such as Resident Evil: Retribution, reached 28%, and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter climbed to 38%. Compared with those numbers, the new film’s 20% score lands near the bottom of Jovovich’s action catalog.
The movie is directed by Adrian Grünberg and written by Bong-Seob Mun. Alongside Jovovich, the cast includes Matthew Modine as Colonel Joseph Lavelle, plus D. B. Sweeney, Don Harvey, Arica Himmel, Michael Stahl-David, and Isabel Myers as Chloe.
This is not the first time one of Jovovich’s action projects has struggled with critics. Her 2020 fantasy action film Monster Hunter also received mixed-to-negative reviews despite its big-budget spectacle. Still, the actor remains closely tied to the action genre and continues to headline physically demanding roles.
