Disney Cancels Live-Action Remake of Beloved Animated Movie

Despite the massive blockbuster success of last year’s live-action Lilo & Stitch remake, it looks like Disney has decided to trim down its upcoming slate of live-action movies based on beloved animated classics. This comes nearly six years after the project was first announced, with Blindspotting director Carlos López Estrada previously attached to helm.

Which beloved animated movie will not be getting a live-action Disney remake?

During a recent Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, Estrada was asked about the current status of Disney’s planned Robin Hood remake of the iconic 1973 animated movie. The filmmaker confirmed that the project has already been canceled despite having already found the perfect music to go with it.

“It’s dead, sadly,” Estrada replied. “I say ‘sadly’ because I actually thought there was something really special (and original!) there. Some truly extraordinary music we had figured out for it.”

He added, “I keep daydreaming about doing it independently with different characters.”

The original animated classic was a musical comedy directed by Wolfgang Reitherman from a story by Larry Clemmons. It famously featured anthropomorphic animals playing the role of Robin Hood characters. The voice cast included Brian Bedford as Robin Hood, Monica Evans as Maid Marian, Phil Harris as Little John, Roger Miller as Alan-a-Dale, Andy Devine as Friar Tuck, Peter Ustinov as Prince John, Pat Buttram as the Sheriff of Nottingham, and more.

The canceled Robin Hood remake was described as a live-action/CG hybrid adaptation, which was expected to also feature anthropomorphic animals, just like in the 1973 film. Estrada would have directed from a screenplay written by Kari Granlund. Estrada previously worked with Disney on the 2021 animated fantasy film Raya and the Last Dragon, while Granlund was the scribe for Disney’s 2019 remake of Lady and the Tramp.
