Star-Studded Thriller With Benedict Cumberbatch Is Leaving Netflix

A 2021 legal drama, starring and co-produced by Benedict Cumberbatch, will be removed from Netflix’s library next month. Based on a real story, the film follows a man held in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp for 14 years without any charge after the 9/11 attacks.

The Mauritanian is leaving Netflix next month

The Mauritanian is leaving Netflix on Wednesday, April 1, 2026. It is based on Mohamedou Ould Slahi’s real-life experience and adapted from his 2015 memoir, Guantánamo Diary.

The film focuses on Slahi, a Mauritanian citizen who endured brutal treatment in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp from 2002 to 2016. After the 9/11 incident, the Mauritanian authorities initially questioned Slahi at the United States’ request. After several interrogations, the US authorities later transferred him to the camp.

Despite never being formally charged with a crime, Slahi spent 14 years in prison. Eventually, lawyer Nancy Hollander takes his case and fights the United States government to prove his innocence.

Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald helmed the film with a screenplay by M.B. Traven, Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvani. Its cast features Tahar Rahim as Mohamedou Ould Slahi, Benedict Cumberbatch as Stuart Couch, Jodie Foster as Nancy, Shailene Woodley as Teri, and Zachary Levi as Neil Buckland, among others.

Cumberbatch’s SunnyMarch served as one of the film’s production companies, which he co-founded with producer Adam Ackland. During the initial stages, the film was titled after Slahi’s memoir. The studio later changed it to Prisoner 760, which was then changed to The Mauritanian.

The film debuted in the United States on 12 February 2021. Critically, it received a mixed-to-positive reception from both professional critics and audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 75% Tomatometer score and 85% Popcornmeter score.

By the end of its theatrical run, the film earned $7.52 million, according to Box Office Mojo. In 2021, it received five BAFTA Awards nominations, including Best Film and Best Leading Actor for Rahim.
