Thunderbolts* Original Sentry Star on if They Still Want to Be in the MCU
Steven Yeun, who was originally cast as Sentry in Thunderbolts*, has addressed whether or not he still wants to be part of the MCU.
Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* was released in United States theaters last May. Directed by Jake Schreier, the movie stars Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, Lewis Pullman as Robert “Bob” Reynolds/Sentry, Geraldine Viswanathan as Mel, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.
Prior to Pullman’s casting, Yeun was tapped to play Sentry role. The Walking Dead actor had previously worked with Schreier on Netflix’s Beef series, as Schreier directed several episodes of that show’s first season.
Production on Thunderbolts* was delayed due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that occurred in 2023. This resulted in Yeun having to drop out of the movie because of scheduling issues.
“I think for me, time passing and things shifting kind of pulled me out of it,” the actor told Variety at the time. “But Jake, I know, is going to do an incredible job. I wanna do a Marvel movie.”
What did Steven Yeun say about the MCU and Thunderbolts*?
Speaking with MovieWeb for Invincible Season 4, Yeun was asked if he had yet seen Thunderbolts* and if he still wanted to be part of the MCU at some point in his career.
“I did,” he said. “I love Jake, Jake Schreier, [an] incredible human director. I did [see it] and I never say never. I’m around.”
Yeun recently starred as Det. Mike Ro in The Rip, which is currently available to stream on Netflix. He’s voicing a character in the animated movie The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, and is also starring in a new Ben Affleck-directed crime thriller titled Animals.
Marvel’s Thunderbolts* is available to stream on Disney+.
