New Star Wars Movie’s Director Compares Jabba the Hutt’s Son to Unexpected Character

Jon Favreau has shared some unexpected insights regarding Jabba the Hutt’s son, Rotta the Hutt, in The Mandalorian and Grogu.

Lucasfilm’s The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives in United States theaters this coming May. Directed by Favreau, the movie serves as a continuation of the Disney+ series The Mandalorian and sees Pedro Pascal reprise his role as Din Djarin. The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White voices Rotta the Hutt in the film.

Who did Jon Favreau compare Jabba the Hutt’s son to?

Speaking with Empire Magazine, Favreau compared Rotta the Hutt’s role in The Mandalorian and Grogu to the Adonis ‘Donnie’ Creed character played by Michael B. Jordan in the Creed movies.

“When you’re trying to establish yourself and your name is famous, when you’re Jabba The Hutt’s kid, what does that do? How has that affected his trajectory? I get a kick out of that,” Favreau said.

Favreau also teased of the character, “[Rotta’s] in top form, fighting in the pits, a gladiator of sorts,” while White said, “My speaking voice changes [as Rotta]. It was helpful, of course, to listen to Jabba.”

The synopsis for the movie reads, “The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu.”

In addition to Pascal and White, the new Star Wars movie will see Sigourney Weaver play a character named Ward. Favreau produces the movie alongside Kathleen Kennedy, Dave Filoni, and Ian Bryce, while the script comes from  Filoni and Favreau.

The Mandalorian and Grogu will be released in United States theaters on May 22, 2026. All three seasons of The Mandalorian, meanwhile, are currently available to stream on Disney+.
