New report reveals Ghostbusters movie and TV show in development
Renowned industry insider Jeff Sneider recently shared that a new animated Ghostbusters movie is in development. This is apart from the already announced Netflix TV show.
Sneider appeared on John Rocha’s THE HOT MIC podcast recently. He shared that “there’s two Ghostbusters projects in the works right now. There’s a movie, an animated movie. And an animated series. Both at Netflix.” He also stated that Sony is helming production for both Netflix projects.
While Sneider shared that the plot details of the movie and the TV show are currently under wraps, he did share the alleged title of the movie. He added, “The movie I’m told is called Ecto. Told from the ghost perspective.”
Commenting on the animated TV show, Sneider conveyed, “The TV show is supposedly set in the 90s, during Walter Peck’s initial run for mayor. Both [movie and TV series] are animated.” Additionally, Sneider speculated that both projects would be aiming at the same audience age group as Stranger Things: Tales From ’85.
In February 2026, Jeff Sneider also shared in his The InSneider newsletter that Sam Jarvis, writer of Dollface, is reportedly on board to write the screenplay for Netflix’s animated Ghostbusters movie. The project began development in 2022.
Meanwhile, in October 2024, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire director Gil Kenan said that more films from the franchise are on the way. He told The Direct, “The answer is yes… we definitely are continuing the conversation of telling big ‘Ghostbuster’ stories on the big screen. And stay tuned. There’ll be more. There’ll be more about that later.”
Speaking about the Ghostbusters animated series, Kenan added, “We are in very active development on our animated series that we’re producing with Netflix.”
