Jake Gyllenhaal Cast in Sports Movie Play by Play From Amazon & Marvel Writer
Jake Gyllenhaal has joined the cast of a new sports movie that comes from Amazon MGM Studios.
Gyllenhaal recently starred as Elwood Dalton in Amazon MGM Studios’ remake of Roadhouse, which was released on Prime Video in 2024. A sequel to that film is currently in development with Gyllenhaal returning; director Doug Liman, however, is not returning, as Ilya Naishuller will instead be directing.
What movie has Jake Gyllenhaal been cast in?
Now, per Deadline, Gyllenhaal is teaming up with Amazon MGM Studios for a new sports movie called Play by Play. The project is being written by Chris McCoy, who did rewrites on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy movie. The outlet also reports that McCoy has written for Disney, Fox, DreamWorks, Paramount, and Laika.
Plot details for Play by Play are being kept under wraps at this time. Gyllenhaal is producing the movie for his Nine Stories banner, while Josh McLaughlin, Religion of Sports’ Tom Brady, and Gotham Chopra also serve as producers.
A release date for Play by Play has not yet been set.
In addition to the Road House movies, Gyllenhaal also has a role in The Bride!, which opens in United States theaters this weekend. That movie — which is directed by Gyllenhaal’s sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal — primarily stars Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale.
“He’s also in business with the [Prime Video] streamer on Honeymoon with Harry, a forthcoming dramedy where he’ll star opposite Kevin Costner, as well as Code Black, a political thriller based on a short story by Harrison Query that’s currently in development,” Deadline’s article notes.
McCoy, meanwhile, recently sold a spec script to Paramount Pictures. That movie is titled Hit the Gas, which is described as a “propulsive thriller,” while further details have not yet been revealed. Sonic the Hedgehog’s Neal Moritz is producing that project.
