The Wild Robot 2: Title, New Director, & More Announced for DreamWorks Movie Sequel

The Wild Robot 2 has received a big update.

The Wild Robot was released in United States theaters in 2024 by DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures. Based on the 2016 novel by Peter Brown, the movie was written and directed by Chris Sanders and features Lupita Nyong’o as the voice of the titular wild robot.

A sequel was announced to be in development in October 2024; however, there haven’t been many updates about the project until now.

What is the update on The Wild Robot 2?

Per TheWrap, The Wild Robot 2 will be titled The Wild Robot Escapes, which is also the title of the second book in Brown’s series.

Sanders will not be returning to direct, though he is still writing the screenplay for the movie. Instead, Troy Quane will be directing the movie, while Heidi Jo Gilbert serves as co-director. Jeff Hermann returns to produce.

Quane co-directed 2019’s Spies in Disguise and 2023’s Nimona with Nick Bruno. As a solo director, he made 2011’s The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol and was also an animator on projects such as 1997’s Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas, 1998’s Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World, 1999’s Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmas, 2000’s Titan A.E., 2001’s Osmosis Jones, 2002’s Eight Crazy Nights, and 2006’s Curious George. He then served as a storyboard artist on 2006’s The Wild, 2007’s Enchanted, 2009’s 9, 2011’s Arthur Christmas, 2012’s Hotel Transylvania, and 2017’s Ferdinand.

A description of The Wild Robot Escapes book reads, “Shipwrecked on a remote, wild island, Robot Roz learned from the unwelcoming animal inhabitants and adapted to her surroundings–but can she survive the challenges of the civilized world and find her way home to Brightbill and the island?”

The Wild Robot Escapes does not yet have a release date. The Wild Robot, meanwhile, is currently available to stream on Netflix.
