Canceled M3GAN Spin-off Movie SOULM8TE Gets Unexpected Update, Could Still Be Released

There may be hope for the M3GAN spin-off movie SOULM8TE yet.

SOULM8TE is intended to be a spin-off of Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions’ M3GAN franchise. The first M3GAN movie was released in 2023, followed by M3GAN 2.0 in 2025. Both films were directed by Gerard Johnstone.

Originally announced in June 2024, SOULM8TE was supposed to come out on January 9, 2026; however, in December 2025, the movie was removed from Universal’s release date calendar. At the time, it was reported that the movie was being shopped around to other studios; however, there haven’t been any updates about the project since then, leading many to believe it would never see the light of day.

What is the update on SOULM8TE?

Now, though, Bloody Disgusting reports that SOULM8TE has received an official MPA rating this week. It has been rated “R” for “strong violence, gore, sexual content, graphic nudity, and language.”

There’s still no announcement about SOULM8TE being sold to a different studio or any kind of release date plan, meaning it remains unclear if M3GAN fans are actually ever going to be able to see the movie. Given that it now has an MPA rating, though, there appears to be some business going on behind-the-scenes, as this may mean that an announcement could be coming sometime in the not-too-distant future.

That, of course, does raise the question about whether or not SOULM8TE will get a theatrical release or if it’ll go straight to a streaming service. While the latter may seem likely given that M3GAN 2.0 underperformed at the box office, there is no definite answer as of yet.

Directed by You Are Not My Mother’s Kate Dolan, SOULM8TE stars Lily Sullivan, David Rysdahl, Claudia Doumit, Oliver Cooper, and more. The plot revolves around a man who purchases an android to keep him company following the death of his wife.
