Scream’s Dewey Actor Takes Blame for Hilarious Goof-up in Part 3
Scream franchise star David Arquette admitted that he was to blame for the infamous bangs that Courtney Cox had in Scream 3. The hairstyle has been a topic of conversation for years now, and it seems that Cox’s ex-husband was the one who had originally pitched the idea.
David Arquette says he pitched Gale’s bangs look in Scream 3
David Arquette, who has been a part of the Scream franchise since the first film in 1996, revealed that he was the one who came up with the idea of Gale actor Courtney Cox getting Bangs for the 2000 cult classic, Scream 3.
During the premiere of Scream 7, Arquette told Extra TV that it was his fault that his ex-wife’s hairstyle had become a pop culture sensation, and not in a positive way.
“I’m sorry for the Scream 3 bangs,” he said. Arquette explained that he had envisioned a different kind of bangs for his former partner. “I suggested Bettie Page. Very blunt bangs like Bettie Page because she’s got dark hair, too. Little pinup thing for Gale Weathers. Didn’t work out that way,” he added.
In a separate interview with Extra TV, Cox also addressed the infamous haircut. She said that she wasn’t sure if the haircut “was [Arquette’s] idea.”
“And if it is, he should never say that because it’s a terrible idea,” she added. “So I went with bangs that time, and it was a big mistake. But at least it’s a conversation piece for the rest of time.”
As Cox, who has appeared in all the Scream movies over three decades, points out, the haircut is a topic of conversation and has remained so for years. So, now, the haircut has become an inseparable part of the Scream universe.
Scream 7 stars Neve Campbell, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, David Arquette, Matthew Lillard, and Courteney Cox, reprising their respective roles.
The film premieres in theatres on February 27, 2026.
