Ryan Gosling’s latest sci-fi adventure, Project Hail Mary, may be weeks away from its theatrical release date, but the movie has already scored its first reactions. Early screenings of the film have drawn reviews from a host of high-profile individuals, and all of them seem to share the same opinion about Gosling’s performance in the feature.
Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary gets first reactions
Helmed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Project Hail Mary follows the misadventure of astronaut Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), who wakes up in a spaceship with no memory of how he got there whatsoever. He eventually discovers that his mission is to solve the mystery behind a substance that is gradually killing the Sun. As humanity’s last hope, Grace also learns that he has extraterrestrial company on board the spacecraft.
The movie’s unique setting appears to have resonated with early viewers, with multiple celebrities taking to social media to share their reactions to Project Hail Mary.
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos gushed about the film in an X (formerly Twitter) update, writing, “Project Hail Mary is outstanding. Ryan Gosling is so talented he somehow conjures emotion and chemistry with his co-star, even though that co-star is an alien rock puppet! It’s an amazing film — huge kudos to the whole Amazon Studios team.”
Academy Award-winning composer Michael Giacchino also raved about Gosling’s latest feature via an Instagram post. He noted, “An original (who’d have thought?) smart, human, and deeply moving film. And did I mention funny? One of those miracles of a movie you absolutely must see on a big screen.”
Meanwhile, Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch had a similar reaction to Project Hail Mary, writing, “It’s a weird, hilarious, joyful, dazzling gem of a movie. Ryan Gosling’s chemistry with a puppet… rock… alien WILL make you cry. Just watch it on the biggest screen possible!” as per Project Hail Mary Updates.
Lastly, Clueless star Alicia Silverstone praised the movie on her Instagram stories, stating, “Ryan Gosling is so funny, so charming, so good. Sandra Hüller also so good. I laughed A LOT; I cried! Go see it. It’s special.”
Following positive first reactions, it is yet to be seen how Project Hail Mary fares with the critics and audience. The film is scheduled to premiere in theaters on March 20, 2026.
