Chris Rock’s Horror Movie Gets Netflix Streaming Date

A 2021 horror thriller starring Chris Rock has a Netflix streaming date set for next month. It serves as the ninth installment in the Saw franchise and follows a detective investigating a Jigsaw copycat.

Spiral: From the Book of Saw begins streaming on Netflix in March

Spiral: From the Book of Saw will begin streaming on Netflix on Thursday, March 19, 2026. The movie marked the return of the horror franchise after five years, though it functions more like a spin-off than a direct sequel.

Darren Lynn Bousman, who helmed Saw II, III, and IV, returned to direct Spiral at Chris Rock’s request. Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger served as the lead writers, while Rock wrote the co-produced the movie. Furthermore, James Wan and Leigh Whannell, the original creators of the franchise, became executive producers.

The cast includes Rock as Detective Zeke Banks, Samuel L. Jackson as Marcus Banks, Max Minghella as Detective William, and Marisol Nichols as Captain Angie, among others. On the other hand, this is the first Saw movie in which Tobin Bell did not reprise his role as Jigsaw.

In a 2018 interview, Bell spoke about always being open to returning to the franchise. For Spiral, he would have returned if the story explored the origins of Billy the Puppet. But since it was largely focused on the copycat, there was no opportunity for the series veteran to return. However, he reprised his role for Saw X two years later.

In a later interview with Radio Times, Bousman explained that he never wanted to include Jigsaw in the movie out of respect for the character and fans of the franchise. “It’s because it’s the ninth instalment of this franchise, but it’s not Saw 9, because there will never be another Tobin Bell, there will never be another Jigsaw,” the director said.

Lionsgate Films initially planned to release Spiral: From the Book of Saw on October 23, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the release was pushed to May 14, 2021. On Rotten Tomatoes, the critics’ score averages 39%, while the audience rating is 75%. Additionally, the movie grossed roughly $40 million worldwide, making it the lowest-grossing movie in the franchise.
