Benjamin Franklin Movie A Great Awakening Trailer Sets Stage for American Revolution

Roadside Attractions has shared the official trailer for A Great Awakening, the upcoming historical drama from Sight & Sound Films. The movie is slated to premiere in theaters on April 3, 2026.

“The film tells the true story of an unlikely friendship between the Reverend George Whitefield and Benjamin Franklin that resulted in one of the most defining moments in American history. With the colonies on the brink of collapse, the Reverend George Whitefield ignites the first Great Awakening, uniting an entire generation with his thundering and faithful sermons and proclamations of liberty,” reads the movie’s official synopsis. “In a miraculous turn of events, one of Whitefield’s closest friends and greatest promoters becomes none other than Benjamin Franklin. With the nation’s freedom hanging in the balance, the founders discover true liberty cannot only be written into law – it must be awakened in the hearts of the people.”

What happens in the A Great Awakening trailer?

The video highlights the unlikely friendship between Anglican priest George Whitefield and founding father Benjamin Franklin. Despite their different beliefs, they were able to form a lifelong bond after Franklin took notice of Whitefield’s intellect. The trailer teases how this friendship made an impact on the start of the American Revolution.

A Great Awakening is directed by Joshua Enck, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jeff Bender and Jonathan Blair. The movie stars John Paul Sneed as Benjamin Franklin, Jonathan Blair as George Whitefield, Josh Bates as Alexander Hamilton, Stephen Foster Harris as William Blount, Zac Johnson as Caleb Strong, and Matt Meyer as Robert Yates. It is produced by Troy Thorne and Steve Buckwalter, with Enck serving as an executive producer. The creative team consists of cinematographer Steve Buckwalter, editor Jordan K. Graff, production designer Chris Rose, and costume designer Lily Steiner.
