The Mist’s Mike Flanagan on Stephen King Remake Being Very Different From 2007 Movie

Mike Flanagan has shared some exciting comments about his upcoming remake of The Mist.

The Mist is a horror novella by Stephen King that was originally published in 1980. The story was previously turned into a 2007 movie directed by Frank Darabont that stars Thomas Jane and Marcia Gay Harden.

Earlier this month, it was announced that Flanagan — known for making Netflix shows like The Haunting of Hill House, The Fall of the House of Usher, and more — had been tapped to write and direct a new version of The Mist for Warner Bros. Pictures. A release date has not yet been announced.

What did Mike Flanagan say about The Mist?

On Bluesky, Flanagan reassured fans that The Mist “is going to be great” and that he wouldn’t do it unless there was an “excellent answer” regarding why he’s remaking the 2007 movie.

“And FWIW, I got the same ‘but why’ comments for The Haunting of Hill House, Bly Manor, House of Usher, Carrie, The Exorcist, and even Ouija: Origin of Evil,” he added. “Also got it for Life of Chuck. I’ve been lucky so far in my career to only take on projects I’m really excited about.”

Flanagan also said that he loves Darabont’s version of The Mist and that there’s “zero point in remaking it,” which is why he’s decided to go in “a different direction.”

He continued, “I learned a long ago never to try to predict what the fans will or won’t argue about (everybody needs to relax, frankly; I just saw a whole chain of people foaming at the mouth over fan-made AI slop posters for The Exorcist)… but yeah, this isn’t a retread. The differences start [on] page 1.”

Further plot details for Flanagan’s The Mist remain under wraps at this time. His Exorcist movie is scheduled to arrive on March 12, 2027.
