Timothée Chalamet on How Dune 3 Is Similar To Interstellar & The Dark Knight

Timothée Chalamet has finally opened up about Dune 3, calling it the “eeriest” one in the sci-fi saga. The actor also gave fresh insight into how he approached Paul Atreides in the final chapter of Denis Villeneuve’s trilogy, which releases in theaters this December.

Timothée Chalamet discusses Dune 3 with Matthew McConaughey

During his conversation with Matthew McConaughey, Timothée Chalamet compared the tonal ambition of Dune 3 to performances in other iconic films before quickly catching himself. “What I think you see at the end of the second one, and across the third one, is yourself in Interstellar and Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight and Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now and stuff like that,” he said before backtracking. “Actually, wait, let me rephrase all of that! Hold up. I cannot put myself in that same boat,” he added, laughing. “Let’s just say, it’s these big movies where you could sneak in something. A curveball.”

The actor emphasized that Dune 3 takes bold creative swings. He described the collaboration with director Denis Villeneuve as more fluid than ever, saying they found a strong rhythm on set. “It’s the eeriest one. It’s a big swing,” Chalamet said, hinting at a darker, more experimental tone for Paul’s journey.

Timothée Chalamet also credited Oscar Isaac, who played Leto Atreides in the first film, as a major influence. “He treated it in a Shakespearean way — to play it heightened and not really care about it being heightened,” Chalamet explained. Watching Isaac’s performance gave him the confidence to take “more liberty than ever.”

Furthermore, he admitted that the scale of the first Dune intimidated him after more naturalistic projects like Beautiful Boy and Call Me by Your Name. By the time he returned for Dune 3, however, he embraced the freedom of the franchise’s world-building. “All the great shit you see on screen is from freedom of movement and freedom of choice,” he said (via Variety).

Now, fans will have to wait and watch to see this come to fruition in Dune 3.
