Amazon Grabs Movie Rights to Bestselling Fantasy Book Weeks After Publication

A bestselling young adult fantasy novel is moving toward the big screen. Amazon MGM Studios is developing a feature adaptation of the debut from Shannon J. Spann, which recently opened at No. 1 on the New York Times Young Adult Hardcover bestseller list.

Amazon MGM Studios to develop movie based on A Stage Set For Villains

Amazon MGM Studios has acquired the rights to develop a feature adaptation of A Stage Set for Villains, the debut novel by New York-based writer and social media strategist Shannon J. Spann, according to Deadline. The novel debuted at No. 1 on the New York Times Young Adult Hardcover bestseller list in its opening week. Entangled Publishing published the book on February 3.

The fantasy novel “follows a cursed teen in a divided land who infiltrates a mysterious theater run by irresistible and deadly godlike beings where mortals compete for immortality in a ruthlessly lethal competition.” As she ventures further, “the fabric of her reality unravels, and a cure for her childhood curse is the least of her worries.” It is the second consecutive title from Entangled’s YA label Mayhem to debut atop the charts.

Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark will produce the film under their Premeditated banner. They are producing through their first-look film and television deal with Amazon MGM Studios. Premeditated’s Director of Development Cayla Tyne oversees the project. Pelletier operates Premeditated as an extension of Entangled Publishing.

Premeditated has set up multiple projects at Amazon MGM Studios, including an adaptation of Elise Kova’s No. 1 New York Times bestselling fantasy novel Dragon Cursed. The company is also developing Shield of Sparrows, Repeat After Me, 69 Million Things I Hate About You, and Survive at the studio.

For television, Premeditated is adapting Fourth Wing and Lux at Amazon MGM Studios. It is also developing Assistant to the Villain at Legendary Entertainment. IAG and Caitlin DiMotta at TroyGould PC represent Premeditated and Entangled/Mayhem. Ellen Goff at HG Literary represents Shannon J. Spann.
