Kate Hudson on if She Regrets Rejecting Spider-Man’s Mary Jane Role

Kate Hudson recently reflected on the time she passed on the opportunity to star as Mary Jane in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man. In a new interview, she said she had no regrets about the same. Before Kirsten Dunst’s casting, Hudson was offered the part, while several actresses like Alicia Witt either auditioned for or were considered for it. However, she ended up turning it down, resulting in Dunst essaying the character and becoming associated with it ever since.

Kate Hudson has no regrets over passing on Spider-Man’s Mary Jane role

Hudson recently appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, where she discussed her career, life, and her Oscar-nominated performances in Song Sung Blue and Almost Famous. During the discussion, host Josh Horowitz brought up the time when the actress opted to star in The Four Feathers alongside the late Heath Ledger instead of signing on to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man.

When asked if she mourned the lost opportunity to star in Spider-Man, Kate Hudson replied that she didn’t. She stated, “I’m really not a look back person. I look back when it’s affecting my life and the people around me, and then I have to be like, ‘Where’s this coming from?’ Then I’ll reflect.”

The two-time Oscar nominee acknowledged that things like passing on the chance to play Mary Jane in Spider-Man stayed in the past and that she could do nothing about them. Bringing her Zodiac sign, Aries, into the conversation, she emphasized that she was the type of person always scouting for new opportunities.

Hudson then said she believed things happened for a reason. Looking at how far she came in her career, she expressed appreciation for “the sliding doors of life.” She subsequently noted that had she chosen to star in Spider-Man, she could have gone on a completely different career trajectory.

The Running Point star joked that she could have made the Tobey Maguire-led franchise “awful.” She added, “I could have been the worst Mary Jane of all time.”

This isn’t Hudson’s first time addressing the matter. Previously, on Watch What Happens Live, she said that while it “would have been nice” to star in Spider-Man, she did at least get to meet, work with, and befriend Heath Ledger after choosing to star in The Four Feathers — an experience she greatly cherished.
