How to Make a Killing: Glen Powell A24 Movie Is Best Enjoyed Knowing This Beforehand
With How to Make a Killing opening in United States theaters this weekend, there are a few things audiences might want to know about the movie before walking into the theater.
How to Make a Killing is a new movie written and directed by John Patton Ford. Being released through A24, the film stars Glen Powell, Margaret Qualley, Jessica Henwick, Bill Camp, Zach Woods, Topher Grace, and Ed Harris.
“Disowned at birth by his obscenely wealthy family, blue-collar Becket Redfellow (Glen Powell) will stop at nothing to reclaim his inheritance, no matter how many relatives stand in his way,” the synopsis for the movie reads.
What should people know about How to Make a Killing beforehand?
How to Make a Killing is Ford’s second feature film after 2022’s Emily the Criminal. Emily the Criminal is much more serious and intense in its tone; How to Make a Killing has its fair share of bloody violence, as one would likely expect from the title, but it’s also a much more comedic film.
This means, then, that watching How to Make a Killing is a very different experience compared to watching Emily the Criminal. Both movies might have some social commentary infused within them, but How to Make a Killing is much more satirical in nature.
It’s also worth noting that the film is loosely inspired by a 1949 British movie called Kind Hearts and Coronets. Kind Hearts and Coronets — which, itself, is loosely based on a 1907 novel titled Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal — is directed by Robert Hamer and sees Alec Guinness play eight different characters. The cast also includes Dennis Price, Valerie Hobson, Joan Greenwood, and more.
“When his mother eloped with an Italian opera singer, Louis Mazzini (Dennis Price) was cut off from her aristocratic family,” a description of Kind Hearts and Coronets reads. “After the family refuses to let her be buried in the family mausoleum, Louis avenges his mother’s death by attempting to murder every family member (all played by Alec Guinness) who stands between himself and the family fortune. But when he finds himself torn between his longtime love (Joan Greenwood) and the widow of one of his victims (Valerie Hobson), his plans go awry.”
Thursday night showings of How to Make a Killing begin tonight.
