Face/Off 2: Sequel to Nicolas Cage & John Travolta Movie Gets Alarming Update
Face/Off 2 has received an alarming update.
Face/Off is a 1997 sci-fi action thriller movie that was released by Paramount Pictures in the United States. Directed by John Woo, the movie stars John Travolta as Sean Archer and Nicolas Cage as Castor Troy.
It was first reported that Paramount Pictures was making a Face/Off remake in 2019. Then, in 2021, it was announced that the project would be a sequel rather than a remake. At the time, it also came to light that Adam Wingard — known for directing 2014’s The Guest, 2024’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and more — was going to direct the movie.
What is the update on Face/Off 2?
While there hasn’t been much news about Face/Off 2 in the past couple of years, Collider is now reporting that Wingard has departed the project and will no longer be directing the movie.
All hope doesn’t seem to be lost, though, as Paramount Pictures is now allowing filmmakers to pitch their own ideas for Face/Off 2, meaning the studio isn’t pulling the plug entirely on the film, at least at this time. The reasoning behind Wingard’s departure is unclear at this time.
While there’s no release date window for Face/Off 2 as of yet, the original Face/Off is currently available to stream on Paramount+ and The Criterion Channel.
A description of the plot reads, “Obsessed with bringing terrorist Castor Troy (Nicolas Cage) to justice, FBI agent Sean Archer (John Travolta) tracks down Troy, who has boarded a plane in Los Angeles. After the plane crashes and Troy is severely injured, possibly dead, Archer undergoes surgery to remove his face and replace it with Troy’s. As Archer tries to use his disguise to elicit information about a bomb from Troy’s brother, Troy awakes from a coma and forces the doctor who performed the surgery to give him Archer’s face.”
