New Sony & Warner Bros. Movie To Fight for Top Spot at Box Office
Two major films from Sony Pictures and Warner Bros. are heading into a tight race for the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office this weekend. With similar projected grosses and second-weekend drops, the competition between the two releases remains close.
GOAT could beat Wuthering Heights’ second box office weekend
Sony Pictures Animation’s GOAT could overtake Wuthering Heights in their second weekend as both titles head into a tight race for No. 1 with projected grosses of about $14M. GOAT is forecast to decline 50%, while Wuthering Heights is expected to drop between 55% and 60%. Last weekend, Wuthering Heights debuted at No. 1 with $32.8M, ahead of GOAT’s $27.2M opening.
The Presidents Day frame delivered $144.4M, ranking as the second-best post-Covid holiday weekend after last year’s $155.3M. Through Tuesday, Wuthering Heights had reached $41M domestically, while GOAT stood at $38M. On Tuesday alone, Wuthering Heights grossed $3,501,448 compared to GOAT’s $2,887,210 (via Box Office Mojo).
School holidays may influence the outcome, with 16% of K-12 schools still on winter break on Friday. GOAT outperformed Wuthering Heights on the most recent Sunday and Monday, narrowing the gap between the two releases. The Warner Bros title led the previous frame, but projections indicate a closer contest in their sophomore outings.
Elsewhere, Lionsgate opens I Can Only Imagine 2 in 3,000 theaters with projections between $8M and $10M. The 2018 original opened to $17.1M on a $7M production cost and ultimately grossed more than $83M domestically. Previews for the sequel begin Thursday afternoon.
Amazon MGM Studios projects that Crime 101 will drop 50% in its second weekend and earn $7.3M, which would push its five-day total to $17.4M. A24 opens How to Make a Killing in 1,600 theaters and expects a low single-digit debut, while 20th Century Studios aims for a $2M opening from 1,100 locations with Psycho Killer.
