Brie Larson & J.J. Abrams’ Horror Movie Gets New Title, Details

The new Brie Larson horror movie from J.J. Abrams and Strange Darling director JT Mollner has received a great update.

In 2025, it was announced that Captain Marvel star Brie Larson was attached to star in a new horror movie titled Fail-Safe. J.J. Abrams is producing the movie, while Mollner is directing. The script, which is based on a short story by Philip Fracassi, comes from Mollner and Brian Duffield, the latter of whom is known for directing 2023’s No One Will Save You.

The movie, per Deadline, is described as “a modern take on the creature horror film told from the perspective of a young boy who slowly begins to discover that his beloved parents are hiding a disturbing secret about his mother’s true nature.”

What is the update on the new Brie Larson horror movie?

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Fail-Safe has received a new title, as the movie is now being called Skeletons.

The Hollywood Reporter also reports that Sony Pictures has beat out Paramount, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Neon for the distribution rights to the project. A release date has not yet been set.

“The project hit the town last week and generated immediate bids, according to sources. At the same time, the project was selling at the European Film Market,” the article notes. “The initial plan by FilmNation Entertainment, WME, and CAA was to sell it by individual territories. Sony, however, came in aggressively to take worldwide rights. It was not immediately clear where financial figures are landing, but it is at least in the mid-$20 million range for domestic rights. Sources say the figures for worldwide are higher.”

Further plot details remain under wraps at this time, and no other casting has yet been announced. In addition to 2023’s Strange Darling, Mollner made 2016’s Outlaws and Angels and wrote the screenplay for 2025’s The Long Walk.
