The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in San Francisco confirms Victoria Jones’ cause of death

The San Francisco Office of the Chief Medical Examiner announced on February 17 that Victoria Jones died from “toxic effects of cocaine,” confirming the cause of death of Tommy Lee Jones’ daughter, which fans and media have sought since early January. Officials determined the manner of death was accidental (via Entertainment Weekly).

Victoria was discovered unresponsive at the historic Fairmont Hotel around 2.52 a.m. on January 1 after San Francisco police and fire departments responded to a medical emergency call.

First responders pronounced her dead at the scene. Dispatch audio obtained by PEOPLE classified the incident as a “code 3 for the overdose, color change.” Their medical experts noted that “color change” typically refers to cyanosis. It is a bluish discoloration of the skin indicating dangerously low blood oxygen levels, often associated with heart or respiratory complications.

Victoria Jones was the daughter of the Oscar-winning No Country for Old Men star and his second wife, Kimberlea Cloughley, whom he married in 1981 and divorced in 1996. The former couple also have a 43-year-old son, Austin Jones.

Following in her father’s footsteps, Victoria pursued acting and appeared in several of his projects. She had a role in the 2002 blockbuster Men in Black II alongside Will Smith. She also appeared in two Westerns directed by her father: 2005’s The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada and 2014’s The Homesman. Her other credits included the 2005 thriller Sorry, Haters and an episode of One Tree Hill that same year.

Court records reviewed by media outlets show Victoria had faced misdemeanor charges in the past year, including drug-related offenses. Now, the confirmation of Victoria Jones’ cause of death closes weeks of uncertainty.
