Glen Powell’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre Movie Gets Disappointing Update
Nearly two weeks after A24 acquired the rights to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell has opened up about his involvement in the upcoming projects. When the development of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie and TV show was announced, it was confirmed that Powell is attached as an executive producer on both projects.
What did Glen Powell say about the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot?
During a recent interview with Variety, when asked if he would be starring in any of A24’s upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre projects, Powell admitted that he’s not set to star in the horror reboot but will be heavily involved behind the scenes through his Barnstorm production company.
“You never know. I am known for wearing masks, between Chad Powers and Leatherface . . . But no, I really do think it’s just something for Barnstorm to produce, but I’m definitely going to be very involved,” Powell said.
In addition, The Running Man star also talked about the creative team’s strong vision for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot, expressing how much they care about the project.
“We just really talked to the rights holders . . . J.T. Mollner, and we have some other creatives around it . . . They’re just so passionate about what we’re doing. They have a really strong vision,” Powell shared. “Everybody around it really cares, and when you have that group mentality protecting something like that — I care about it, everybody cares about it — I know we’re gonna do something really special with it, so I’m feeling very, very good. It was a long process to get there, but I know we have something really fun ahead.”
At the moment, A24 and Powell’s Barnstorm banner are developing a Texas Chainsaw Massacre series and movie, with the latter still in the early stages of development. The Long Walk writer JT Mollner will direct the show, which will serve as A24’s first project for the franchise. Besides Powell, the show and movie will also be executive-produced by Dan Cohen for Barnstorm, Ben Ross for Image Nation, Stuart Manashil, and Roy Lee and Steven Schneider for Spooky Pictures, along with original 1974 movie co-writer Kim Henkel for Exurbia Films. In addition, Ian Henkel and Pat Cassidy are also producing for Exurbia Films.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre franchise centers around Leatherface and his backwoods family, who terrorize innocent visitors trespassing on their lands in the isolated Texas countryside. The first installment was directed by Tobe Hooper (Poltergeist) in 1974. Before the A24 acquisition, the franchise had a total of ten films, with the most recent entry being Netflix’s 2022 adaptation. The film series has a combined gross of over $252 million worldwide.
