Wuthering Heights 2 Gets Answer After Incomplete Adaptation
Emerald Fennell has responded to questions about whether her take on Wuthering Heights could continue beyond the events depicted in the film. The filmmaker addressed sequel speculation following discussion about the story ending before the latter portion of Emily Brontë’s novel.
Emerald Fennell on if Wuthering Heights 2 could happen
Emerald Fennell addressed the possibility of a Wuthering Heights sequel during an interview with ScreenRant. When asked about it, she said, “Oh my God. Can you imagine Wuthering Heights 2? More Heights, more Wuthering.” Her comments were made in reference to her 2026 film adaptation, which ends before the novel’s second half begins.
Fennell explained, “The thing is that this book is so dense, it’s so complicated, and it’s so epic. It takes place over generations.” She said that adapting the full story would require “a miniseries, or even a series of 10 episodes,” indicating the original material’s depth and length. Fennell stated, “It was always going to be either you make a miniseries… or you do what I’ve done here and make your own kind of response to the book.”
Her version ends with Catherine’s death and Heathcliff’s grief, omitting the second generation central to Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel. In the source material, Cathy gives birth to a daughter, also named Cathy, and Heathcliff fathers a son with Isabella. The novel continues with the lives of these children and their intertwined fates.
The original narrative sees Heathcliff taking control of both Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange through calculated marriages and inheritance. Eventually, the next generation, Cathy, Linton, and Hareton, come into focus. Unlike Fennell’s adaptation, Brontë’s version ends with resolution and a sense of restoration.
2026’s Wuthering Heights stars Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, and it focuses exclusively on Cathy and Heathcliff’s relationship. Critics have noted the film’s narrative stops at the midpoint of the book. Despite speculation, Fennell has not confirmed any plans for a sequel and emphasized her film as a personal interpretation rather than a comprehensive adaptation.
Wuthering Heights is currently playing in theaters.
