Avengers: Doomsday Features ‘New Level’ of Narrative Complexity for MCU Movies

The Russo Brothers recently teased the complex story at the heart of Avengers: Doomsday.

What did the Russos say about Avengers; Doomsday’s complexity?

After a small hiatus from Marvel after 2019’s Avengers: Infinity War, Anthony and Joe Russo have returned to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The Russos’ previous Marvel movies have combined thrilling action with high emotional stakes. Judging by the Russo Brothers’ latest comments to Empire Magazine, the tone of Avengers: Doomsday will reach a “new level.”

“As much as we run at the fun of what these films can be, we also run at the complexity and the difficulty of what these movies can do at a narrative level,” the Russo Brothers said to Empire Magazine (via Culture Crave). “I think we’ve found a new level of that in Doomsday.”

The Russos pointed to the film’s villain as the driving force behind the tonal shift.

“Victor von Doom demands a certain tone,” the Russos added.

Avengers: Doomsday will see the Avengers team up with the Wakandans, the New Avengers, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four to face Victor von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom.

Avengers: Doomsday features a large ensemble of new and returning stars, including Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Letitia Wright as Shuri/Black Panther, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, and more.

Robert Downey Jr. makes his highly anticipated MCU return, but it won’t be as Tony Stark/Iron Man. Downey will portray Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom. So far, Marvel has released four teaser trailers that see various Avengers preparing for battle against Doom, their greatest challenge to date.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 18, 2026.
