Netflix Adds Popular Ethan Hawke Horror Movie Today

Blumhouse‘s 2022 supernatural horror movie starring Academy Award nominee Ethan Hawke has just been added to Netflix‘s library. As of today, The Black Phone is now officially available to stream on Netflix, nearly four months after its 2025 sequel was first released in theaters.

What do we know about Ethan Hawke’s The Black Phone movie?

The Black Phone was directed by Doctor Strange’s Scott Derrickson from a screenplay that he co-wrote with long-time collaborator C. Robert Cargill. The film was based on the award-winning short story by Joe Hill from his New York Times bestseller 20th Century Ghosts. It featured Hawke as a serial killer, called the Grabber, who kidnaps children and traps them in his basement before killing them. The ensemble cast also included Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, James Ransone, Jeremy Davies, Brady Hepner, Jacob Moran, E. Roger Mitchell, and more.

“The film tells the story of Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, who is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement,” reads the official synopsis. “When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.”

The movie was produced by Derrickson, Cargill, and Jason Blum, with Hill serving as an executive producer. It was a co-production between Blumhouse and Crooked Highway Productions. Since its 2022 debut, the first installment has maintained a Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes with an 81% Tomatometer rating. Even though Black Phone 2 also received positive reviews, the sequel wasn’t able to surpass its predecessor’s approval rating, as it only scored 72%.
