Jason Momoa’s New Video Game Movie Helldivers Gets Release Date
Following the blockbuster success of last year’s A Minecraft Movie, Jason Momoa has found his next major video game adaptation with Sony Pictures’ Helldivers movie. The live-action project will be based on PlayStation‘s bestselling shooter video game series.
According to Deadline, Momoa has officially signed on to star in the Helldivers movie, with Fast & Furious director Justin Lin set to direct the adaptation. Further details about his role are still under wraps. In addition to Momoa’s casting, the studio has also announced the movie’s theatrical release date.
When is the release date for Helldivers?
Sony Pictures’ Helldivers movie is now scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 10, 2027. At the moment, the live-action adaptation has no direct box office competition yet on the day of its release. However, it is set to debut in the same month as Steven Spielberg’s Gremlins 3, Disney’s Frozen III, and the untitled movie from the Everything Everywhere All at Once filmmakers.
The project is produced by Hutch Parker, Lin for Perfect Storm Entertainment, and Asad Qizilbash for PlayStation Productions. This marks the latest collaboration between Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, following 2022’s Tom Holland-led Uncharted movie.
Helldivers is a Swedish third-person shooter video game developed by Arrowhead Game Studios in 2015. Inspired by the cult classic movie Starship Troopers, the dystopian game follows the soldiers of the future as they struggle to protect the planet against alien robots and bugs. It also received a sequel on May 22, 2024, which became one of the fastest-selling PlayStation games of all time, with 12 million copies sold in its first 12 weeks. The game hails from director and designer Johan Pilestedt.
Besides the new video game movie, Momoa is also attached to star in several high-profile movies, including the road comedy Animal Friends with Ryan Reynolds; the DC Universe movie Supergirl, where he’ll play iconic anti-hero Lobo; Dune: Part Three, which will feature him reprising Duncan Idaho from the first installment; and the live-action Street Fighter movie.
