Sony Canceled Amphibia Creator’s Adventure Movie – Report

A previously announced fantasy adventure film has been quietly scrapped by Sony. The project’s writer, Matt Braly, has now spoken out about what led to the decision, offering new details about its development.

Matt Braly says his Thai inspired animated movie was canceled

Amphibia creator Matt Braly recently revealed that a Thai inspired animated feature he had been developing for more than two years will no longer move forward. He explained that the studio ultimately decided the project was not commercially viable.

In his recent Instagram post, the writer explained that he received the news at the beginning of 2025. He said he was proud of the screenplay he co wrote with Rebecca Sugar and praised the development team that supported the film during its early stages. Despite his disappointment, he stressed that he respected the studio’s judgment. “I understand these decisions are not made lightly and have nothing but respect for the studio, which continues to put out amazing films,” he wrote.

The project followed a teenage boy who journeys into a world of Thai spirits in an effort to heal himself before undergoing a frightening and life altering medical operation. According to Braly, the story focused less on curing illness and more on accepting difficult realities.

According to Braly, the project carried deep personal meaning. He explained, “I was diagnosed with an incurable chronic illness at a very young age that brought permanent changes to my lifestyle.” He also shared several pieces of artwork online, giving fans a glimpse at the visuals.

Braly initially did not identify which company was behind the project. However, Variety later confirmed that Sony Pictures Animation had canceled the film. The feature had first been announced three years earlier in a Deadline report stating that Sony was developing a fantasy adventure from Braly.
