Latest Swamp Thing Updates Have DCU Fans Excited

James Gunn‘s latest Instagram story, featuring an illustration of Swamp Thing, has sparked fresh speculation about the development status of a new Swamp Thing movie. The illustration was also shared on social media by a fan, who expressed their desire to see Daredevil: Born Again star Vincent D’Onofrio take on the role, consequently drawing the actor’s attention. Notably, the yet-to-be-released film was confirmed to be part of the initial slate of films and television shows of Gunn and Peter Safran‘s DC Universe, which make up Chapter 1 – Gods and Monsters.

James Gunn shares Swamp Thing artwork on Instagram

Instagram account @heavymetal recently shared an illustration of Swamp Thing on their handle. They also offered a brief history of the artist behind the illustration, Michael Zulli, in the caption. This post drew Gunn’s attention, and he reshared it on his stories.

The new Swamp Thing film has experienced little to no movement since its initial announcement. An actor has also not been cast as the titular character. James Mangold, known for acclaimed films like Logan and A Complete Unknown, is attached to the project as writer and director. Last year, in an appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn revealed that Mangold hadn’t turned in a script, attributing it to the filmmaker’s focus on his packed filming schedule. However, he said that they were talking to Mangold about the film again.

Sometime after this, speculation arose that the project had been shelved. This was due to the announcement of Mangold striking a deal with Paramount to develop, produce, and direct multiple feature films. However, the director’s representatives debunked the rumors. They told io9 that James Mangold “[remained] attached and available to develop [Swamp Thing] and his other projects” (via Gizmodo).

Gunn offered further clarification on the project in an interview with Rolling Stone. He told the outlet that Mangold was “still invested [in the movie].” He added, “Some things take a long time. We’ll see what happens.”

While plot details for Swamp Thing are unknown, James Mangold has shared his vision for the film. Speaking to Variety, he said that the film will be “standalone” and that he views it as “a very simple, clean, Gothic horror movie about this man/monster.”

Vincent D’Onofrio wants to play Swamp Thing in DCU

Vincent D’Onofrio responded to a fan who shared the Swamp Thing artwork on X (formerly Twitter) and told him it was his “turn to join the DCU.” The Marvel actor, who has expressed interest in tackling the character several times, said, “Tell Gunn. He knows I’m a huge fan.”
