Whistle’s Ending Post-Credits Scene Twist Explained by Star

Whistle recently hit theaters, and its post-credits scene left audiences shocked and unsettled. In a recent interview, the film’s director, Corin Hardy, and star Sophie Nélisse, addressed the scene and its implications for a sequel.

The supernatural horror movie follows a group of high school students. They find an Aztec Death Whistle and blow it. Consequently, they are hunted down by their future deaths. Seeking to change their fates, they begin an investigation into the artifact’s origins.

Whistle‘s post-credits scene sees a new teenage character blow the Aztec death whistle in a packed high school auditorium.

Speaking to ScreenRant, Corin Hardy and Sophie Nélisse addressed the scene and its role in setting up a sequel. Hardy said that “it was too good to not tease” a potential follow-up whose story would be on a “bigger scale” than the original film.

He added that the possibility of the auditorium’s crowd being in danger as a result of the teenager’s action depended on the audience’s perception. Hardy also revealed that the scene was originally written to take place in the school’s canteen, but that he changed it after feeling that “it [needed] to be the maximum audience possible.”

The director further stated that contemplating the consequences of the teenager’s whistle made him “laugh a little bit.” He continued, “If you know the mythology and what’s going to happen to 400 of them, that would make an interesting movie in its own right.” Hardy elaborated, “I think the mythology lends itself to more stories. If we got the chance to tell them, it would obviously be very cool to continue telling Whistle stories.”

Meanwhile, Nélisse shared her thoughts on the post-credits scene. She pointed out how her character, Ellie, and Dafne Keen‘s character, Chris, survived the events of the original film. The actress noted that because of this, they were now in a position to “save more people.”

She then acknowledged how Chris and Ellie had “a lot of pressure on their shoulders” after surviving the first film’s events. Hearing this, Hardy humorously added, “What you didn’t see is the cutaway where Ellie grabs two pairs of earplugs and shoves them into their ears.”

Corin Hardy directed Whistle from Owen Egerton’s screenplay. Besides Keen and Nélisse, the film stars Percy Hynes White, Nick Frost, Sky Yang, and Michelle Fairley, among others.
