Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle Gets Promising DCU Update From Director
A new update from one of the DCU’s co-heads has shone some light on what fans might expect from the future of Blue Beetle, and his status as a DCU hero.
What’s the latest update on Blue Beetle’s DCU status?
In a recent interview with TheWrap, Peter Safran (who is one half of DC Studios’ CEO alongside James Gunn) was asked about the potential return of the character Jaime Reyes. Although the Blue Beetle movie came out prior to the DCU‘s official start, Gunn has noted that the character does exist in the new DCU.
According to Safran, the chapter of Blue Beetle hasn’t closed just yet, and as far as he knows, the character is a part of the DCU. Safran went on to say that he’d love to keep making movies with the characters and working with actor Xolo Maridueña, but nothing concrete is set yet.
“I don’t think that chapter has been closed. I’ve had friendly conversations with Peter Safran and John Rickard. And I know James is a huge fan of Blue Beetle, and he’s said multiple times that Blue Beetle is part of the DCU,” said Safran.
Safran also touched on the long-rumored animated series involving Blue Beetle, hinting that we could see more of the Reyes family in the future.
“I will say that I personally – I’m not saying that they’ve said it – I personally would love to continue Blue Beetle 2, Blue Beetle 3, work with Xolo (Maridueña) and the whole Reyes family. But we have had conversations of how we can expand the adventures of the Reyes family via animation. And if that’s something that finally happens, whether it happens or not, conversations have been had. It would be nice. I think that you can do so much with animation, and it’s also a fun medium that I’ve always wanted to explore. So if the movie gods and the people and our dear friends at DC and Warner Bros. see it fit, I would love nothing more than to continue to tell that story.”
As of right now, it’s unclear exactly when Blue Beetle will show up, or how. However, we do know that his 2023 film is not considered “canon” to the overall DCU. Gunn has clarified that, although Blue Beetle does exist in the DCU, the film (and any DC media released prior to the first four projects for the DCU) would not be in his own canon.
An animated television show based around Blue Beetle, as Safran mentioned, was also rumored to be in the works for some time. Originally mentioned in 2024, the series was expected to potentially act as a launching off point for a proper DCU film, although no new information has come of the series lately. The latest news we’ve seen is that Maridueña said the show could come out sometime in 2026.
