New Mattel Movie Is Toy Brand’s Most Bizarre Yet

Mattel’s new movie is the studio’s most bizarre pitch yet.

Mattel Studios was behind 2023’s Barbie, which was directed by Greta Gerwig and released through Warner Bros. Pictures. That movie was a major hit, as it grossed approximately $1.448 billion globally and received many accolades. The studio has also partnered with Amazon MGM Studios for Masters of the Universe, which arrives in theaters this summer.

A number of other Mattel Studios projects are in development, including a Monster High movie, a Matchbox film starring John Cena that is expected to be released in 2026, and more.

What is Mattel’s new movie?

Per Deadline, it has now been announced that Mattel Studios is making a Tony the Tattooed Man feature film. Tracie Laymon, known for helming 2024’s Bob Trevino Likes It, has been tapped to write and direct the movie.

“First introduced in 1992, Tony the Tattooed Man was an illustratable muscle-bound action figure, inviting kids to decorate his body with soluble temporary tattoos applied by hand and to continually customize and reimagine his appearance,” the article reads. “Given its short time on the market, the novelty toy has added value now as a rare vintage collectible.”

Laymon said in a statement, “I was immediately drawn to Tony the Tattooed Man from the minute I saw his name and then learned about his short-lived journey as a discontinued toy. His story is a reminder of the healing power of second chances and not judging a book – or a person – by their cover, a message I believe the world needs right now. It is an honor to partner with Mattel, who are true allies for artists, on a film that will help restore our faith in humanity.”

Mattel Studios’ Robbie Brenner added, “After seeing Bob Trevino Likes It and the specificity and emotional depth that Tracie brings to her characters, I knew that she was the perfect person to develop Tony the Tattooed Man. It’s a story that feels especially relevant today, one that explores looking beyond first impressions and leading with empathy.”

No casting information for the Tony the Tattooed Man has been announced. A release date has not yet been set.
