It Follows 2 Update: Maika Monroe Teases Surprising Script
Maika Monroe, the star of the long-awaited It Follows 2, shared an interesting update on the sequel’s surprising script.
What is Maika Monroe’s new It Follows 2 update?
In 2023, Neon announced that Monroe would star in They Follow, a sequel to 2012’s cult horror movie It Follows. David Robert Mitchell returns to write and direct, while Monroe reprises her role as Jay Height.
They Follow was slated to enter production in 2025, but scheduling conflicts led to several delays. Even without a set start date, Monroe shared a promising update about the anticipated horror movie.
“Rumors have been spreading that it will be happening. So I would stay positive because I’ve heard some good news recently,” Monroe told EW. “So we’ll see.”
There is a script for They Follow, and Monroe has seen it. According to Monroe, the sequel will take her character in a different but exciting direction.
“It’s not at all what I expected, where you would find [her character] Jay, which I thought was really interesting,” Monroe added. “I was like, ‘Whoa! Cool,’ which I think the audience will probably have a similar reaction. I know this might sound cliché, but it’s staying true to the original where we’re bringing back all the same team . . . The story is very much still in that space, but it’s just grander and, yeah, I’m really, really excited for it.”
They Follow will take place approximately 10 years after the events in the first film. Mitchell will produce alongside Jak Weiner and Chris Bender of Good Fear Content. It Follows producers David Kaplan, Erik Rommesmo, Rebecca Green, and Laura Smith will also return for the sequel.
In It Follows, college student Jay Height (Monroe) inherits a curse after having sex with her boyfriend for the first time. A deadly entity now follows Jay and will kill her unless she passes the curse to someone else.
Released in 2014, It Follows became an indie hit, grossing over $23 million worldwide on a $1 million budget.
