X-Men’s Ian McKellen Possibly Spoils Avengers: Doomsday in Tom Holland-Style

Sir Ian McKellen seems to have channeled his inner Tom Holland in a recent interview, as, from the looks of it, the Hollywood veteran has inadvertently given away a major Avengers: Doomsday spoiler. While talking about his stint as Magneto in the X-Men franchise, the 86-year-old actor dropped some information about his character’s arc in the highly anticipated Avengers sequel, before quickly realizing his mistake.

Ian McKellen accidentally reveals Magneto’s rampage in Avengers: Doomsday

During a recent podcast appearance, the Lord of the Rings alum unintentionally admitted that his mutant character ends up totaling the region of New Jersey in the upcoming Avengers 5.

“Nowadays, I think things will become a little bit easier, though. I did destroy New Jersey the other day,” Ian McKellen noted on the Jake’s Takes podcast hosted by Jake Hamilton. Realizing that he might’ve shared an Avengers: Doomsday spoiler, he instantly called out his error, stating, “Oh, I perhaps shouldn’t have said that.”

While McKellen appeared startled by his mistake, the Emmy-winning host smoothed proceedings by changing the topic. Notably, his apparent Avengers: Doomsday spoiler comes amid an ongoing speculation that claims that Magneto will have a more significant role in the movie than his X-Men counterparts. While the rumor has yet to be officially ratified, McKellen’s reveal of Magneto’s big moment in the film suggests that it could hold some meaning after all.

In the interview, the two-time Academy Award nominee also talked about how much he enjoyed playing the supervillain in the 20th Century Fox X-Men movies. “I didn’t realise how popular he was. I thought he was the villain, but no, I think people rather like his attitude. It was fun working with all those younger actors who were so confident about the parts they played in many other movies,” he said.

Other than Ian McKellen’s accidental Avengers: Doomsday spoiler, almost all details regarding Magento’s role and the movie’s plot continue to remain under wraps. Fans will have to wait until the film’s release date, December 18, 2026, to confirm such rumors.
