New Disney Horror Movie Beats All Others at Box Office, #2 Is a Shocker

Disney’s latest black comedy survival horror movie has left the fans in awe and secured the top spot at the weekend box office. The film faced tough competition from others during the weekend. However, it is the second spot that is a shocker for many.

Sam Raimi’s Send Help takes top spot at weekend box office

Disney called the weekend at No. 1 with Send Help, a 20th Century Studios release directed by Sam Raimi. The island-set horror thriller finished the domestic weekend with $20 million. Premium formats played a key role in the film’s performance. Large format screens accounted for 46% of the weekend total, while 3D contributed 8%. The film was tracking a $5.7 million Sunday, helping it secure the overall weekend win despite fierce competition.

Starring Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien, Send Help follows two coworkers whose strained power dynamic flips after their plane crashes on a remote island. The film carries a $40 million production budget and reached $28.1 million globally by the end of the weekend.

The Disney-backed horror release outperformed a varied slate that included the documentary Melania, Jason Statham’s Shelter, animated holdover Zootopia 2, and the still-running Avatar: Fire and Ash.

Markiplier’s Iron Lung comes in a close second after Send Help

The Iron Lung’s box office result gave the weekend’s biggest surprise. Iron Lung finished a close second with $17.8 million, far exceeding early expectations for a self-distributed indie release.

The horror film earned $9 million on Friday from 3,015 theaters, briefly topping daily charts before settling into second place for the weekend overall. Based on the 2022 indie horror game, Iron Lung was co-directed by its creator, David Szymanski, and Markiplier, who also stars. The film matched its domestic weekend total with $17.8 million globally (via Box Office Mojo).

Together, Send Help and Iron Lung dominated an unconventional box office scene.
