The Wrecking Crew Director, Morena Baccarin, & Jacob Batalon Talk Action Movie, Tease Sequel
ComingSoon’s Tyler Treese spoke with The Wrecking Crew director Angel Manuel Soto and stars Morena Baccarin and Jacob Batalon about the new action movie. The trio teased a sequel, discussed their characters, and talked about the intense hallway fight scene. Starring Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista, The Wrecking Crew is now streaming on Prime Video.
“In this action comedy, two estranged half-brothers, Jonny (Jason Momoa) and James (Dave Bautista) are forced to reunite after their father’s mysterious death. As they set out to uncover the truth, buried secrets resurface and loyalties are tested, unveiling a conspiracy that can tear their family apart. Together, they are ready to WRECK anything that gets in their way. Set in the streets of Hawaii, the film is directed by Angel Manuel Soto (Blue Beetle) and also stars Claes Bang, Jacob Batalon, Stephen Root, and Morena Baccarin,” says the synopsis.
Tyler Treese: Morena, you get to say the legendary Han Solo line in this film. Jason says, “I love you,” and you just go, “I know.” That was so rad. What did you like most about that dynamic being subverted, where the woman is fully in control of the relationship and is the coolest one in the room despite being around all these macho men?
Morena Baccarin: Is that surprising [laughs]? I’m joking.
Ángel Manuel Soto: She’s not [laughs].
Baccarin: I feel like that was improv, maybe.
Soto: That was adlibbed.
Baccarin: We really worked, myself and Jason, on the relationship with these two, and like, it was very important to find moments to really make it specific, like what they’ve been through, where they’re going, what’s happening. I felt it was really important that she does not get back together with him now. Like it became a little bit like, you don’t know if it’s gonna happen.
But like in my mind, I do not get back together with him, and I had to play that all the way through. And so in these moments, even when I kiss him, it’s like an anger kiss, you know? It’s like, “Oh, we’ve been through this crazy thing together.” So, like all those moments and things came out of really deepening the relationship.
Soto: I wanna add to that a little bit because we talked about that a lot. Really there was this whole idea of them coming together, but I’m like, you know, this whole journey that the character is going through of being better… It’s the beginning of his healing process. It’s not that he’s already the perfect guy. Right. And showing the way that we’ve shown her, knowing the very intense and powerful and strong Latino woman around my life, there’s no way she would’ve gone back to him right away. She might see there’s a change. But she’s still pretty strong. We always were, like in our conversations, “You guys are not back together. No.” You just told him at the airport, right? I’m going to the beach, and I’m going back home. And this is the beach. So we don’t know if she went back home.
Baccarin: I just went to the beach.
Soto: And that’s for a sequel!
Angel, I love the movie Oldboy. So I’m excited any time I see a hallway fight. They’re always so cool. How is it working with David Bautista and shooting that sequence?
Soto: That was actually amazing. And that was one of the first moments that I was talking to John Valero, our stunt coordinator and second unit director. We worked in Blue Beetle before as well, and we also had a hallway sequence, not quite like Oldboy […] And we were like, okay, so we have this moment, this house already had this long corridor with glasses. I was like, “We want to do this action sequence for Dave kicking, but we don’t have the time nor the budget to do it traditionally with coverage.” I was like, “Great excuse to do our Oldboy homage,” and it was great. Like Dave loved the idea, and everybody got on board. We built a set, we shot it, and again, JV and the team delivered greatly.
Jacob, we get to see you not just behind the laptop, but you get your own action sequence here. Jason is chasing you. He compares you to Jackie Chan. It’s very funny. How is it getting to have that action scene?
Jacob Batalon: It’s cool. You know, I hate taking credit for my stuntman because he really killed it. Like, I really, really cannot say enough about how great the stunt team is. They’re awesome. Just the way that they’ve coordinated everything to make it so realistic and grounded in a sense.
But it’s fun to get beat up by people in a very cool artistic way. It’s just really great to be part of the process, and I would hope that people think I’m super cool. I’m gonna lie to everyone and all my friends that I did it all on red carpets and stuff.
Thank you all so much for your time, and congrats on the movie. Fingers crossed for a The Wrecking Crew sequel.
Ángel Manuel Soto: Yes, sir!
Thanks to Morena Baccarin, Jacob Batalon, and Angel Manuel Soto for taking the time to talk about The Wrecking Crew.
