Return to Silent Hill Star Breaks Down Horror Movie’s Confusing Ending

The recently released Return to Silent Hill may have confused viewers with its convoluted ending, but Hannah Emily Anderson is certain about what the horror movie was trying to convey. In a recent interview, she opened up about the final moments of the Christophe Gans-helmed supernatural thriller, sharing her understanding of the film’s hopeful yet confusing conclusion.

Hannah Emily Anderson had this to say about Return to Silent Hill ending

During a recent conversation, the Canadian actress noted that, according to her, Return to Silent Hill concludes on a positive note with James Sunderland (Jeremy Irvine) receiving the rare opportunity to reset his life.

Describing herself as “a deep romantic at heart,” Hannah Emily Anderson admitted to ScreenRant Grant Hermanns that she believes that “James gets a second chance” at life towards the end of the psychological horror drama.

Return to Silent Hill centers around the journey of Jeremy Irvine’s character, James, who tries to find a new normal after losing his girlfriend, Mary. Along the way, he encounters several terrifying incidents that bring him to the cusp of complete desolation. As such, James ultimately decides to call it quits by driving straight into Toluca Lake along with Mary’s body.

However, instead of dying, James wakes up in the moment when he first met Mary. As he relives their maiden encounter, he decides not to repeat his mistakes and chooses to drive away from Silent Hill.

While many may interpret the Return to Silent Hill ending as James hallucinating what could’ve been in his final moments, Hannah Emily Anderson believes otherwise. “I think he gets another go around,” she said of the movie’s divisive conclusion, adding that it would’ve been “too heartbreaking” for James to go through his trauma of the past by facing Silent Hill.

Released on January 23, 2026, Return to Silent Hill has garnered abysmal reviews from critics and audiences alike, as evidenced by its 20% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes.
