Ethan Hawke & Russell Crowe’s Period Adventure Film Gets Great RT Score

Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe-led new period adventure movie has received an incredible score on the review-aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes. The Weight, directed by Padraic McKinley, had its world premiere at this year’s Sundance on January 26 and quickly caught the attention of professional critics.

What critics are saying about The Weight

The Weight has garnered mostly positive reviews from critics. Chase Hutchinson
of TheWrap
called Hawke’s performance in the movie “mesmerizing.” Hutchinson added, “The action scenes are tense and well-executed, though it’s the way he grounds it that makes you feel every setback.”

Benjamin Lee of The Guardian also praised Hawke. “It’s carried through by an all-in Hawke who is really put through the wringer, arguably his most physically gruelling role to date, a muscular and entirely persuasive performance that continues his winning streak,” Lee observed.

Variety’s Peter Debruge noted how Samuel was different from the characters Hawke regularly portrays. Debruge wrote, “In the past, Hawke often played characters who were shy, scruffy and slightly unsure of themselves, but here he’s the film’s proactive problem solver — a classical hero more than capable of carrying the film.”

Meanwhile, Pete Hammond of Deadline hailed the movie as “pure gold.” The critic added in the review, “This proves to be the gritty kind of story that is perfect for a revival, and it also marks yet another high point in the career of Ethan Hawke.”

The Weight gets good score on Rotten Tomatoes

The Weight currently has a 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This number will likely change as more critics publish their opinions on the movie. However, it’s still a very strong beginning.

Set in 1930s Oregon, The Weight follows Samuel Murphy (Hawke), who, after separating from his daughter, ends up in prison. There, he soon becomes involved in the warden’s (Crowe) dangerous plans. Julia Jones, Austin Amelio, and Sam Hazeldine are also part of the cast of the movie.
