Ted Lasso Star Replaces Kit Harington as Eret on How to Train Your Dragon 2

How to Train Your Dragon 2 has found its new Eret, replacing Kit Harington’s animated version with a fresh face from the cast of Ted Lasso. The live-action sequel brings a new take on the dragon trapper character. Production is now moving forward on the next chapter of the franchise.

Phil Dunster added to the cast of How to Train Your Dragon 2 as Eret

Phil Dunster will play Eret in Universal Pictures’ live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2 (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Kit Harington originally voiced Eret in the 2014 animated film. The character is a boastful dragon trapper who calls himself the “finest dragon trapper alive.” Dunster, best known for his Emmy-nominated role as Jamie Tartt in Ted Lasso, will also appear in the upcoming HBO comedy series Rooster.

Dean DeBlois returns as the writer, director, and executive producer for the live-action adaptation. He previously directed and co-wrote the original animated trilogy, as well as last year’s live-action film. The sequel continues the story of Hiccup, now played by Mason Thames, and his dragon Toothless. They face new challenges, including the return of Hiccup’s long-lost mother and the threat of Drago Bludvist, played by Ólafur Darri Ólafsson.

The cast also includes Nico Parker as Astrid, Gerard Butler as Stoick, Cate Blanchett as Valka, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, and Harry Trevaldwyn. Blanchett and Butler reprise their roles from the animated series. Marc Platt and Adam Siegel produce through Marc Platt Productions, and Lexi Barta oversees production for Universal.

The original 2014 animated How to Train Your Dragon 2 followed Hiccup’s discovery of a secret dragon sanctuary and his reunion with his mother. The character of Eret originally worked for Drago, capturing dragons, but he later switched sides after realizing Drago’s cruelty.

Universal’s first live-action How to Train Your Dragon release grossed $636 million worldwide. The four-film franchise, adapted from Cressida Cowell’s best-selling book series, has earned over $2.2 billion globally.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 is currently in production and is scheduled for theatrical release on June 11, 2027.
