Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan reveal Smoke and Stack’s origin story in Sinners
Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan laid out the intricate timeline that leads to the start of Sinners. The film finds Jordan’s twins returning to their Mississippi hometown after years away, but the full scope of their journey—from patricide and war to heartbreak and crime—was only hinted at on screen.
Coogler provided a clear chronology. “They killed their father, hid out at Mary’s mom’s place, then went to New York and joined the military. Went to fight in France, came back, and they went back home for a little bit,” the director explained to Proximity Media. This return to Mississippi after World War I became a pivotal moment for Stack’s relationship with Mary (Hailee Steinfeld), who had grown up in their absence.
“Mary was older, so, that was when Stack and Mary happened,” Coogler said. Jordan added, “And [Stack started] seeing her in a different light.” This romance faced immediate friction, as Coogler noted, “Because she was like a younger sister to them, you know? Smoke and Mary’s mom didn’t love that.”
This period marked the beginning of a separation between the brothers. “It was like a three-year run where the twins had basically broke up,” Coogler revealed. During this split, Stack and Mary moved to Little Rock, while Smoke and Annie (Wunmi Mosaku) settled down. Tragedy, however, would reunite the twins. “When they lost their daughter was when things got rocky. They both basically left their partners and met up again in Chicago,” Coogler stated.
Jordan further explained that the brothers worked for Al Capone, “doing the jobs that Capone didn’t want to do himself.” They used this experience to study the criminal landscape, ultimately deciding to leverage that knowledge to start their own venture back in Mississippi.
With this explanation, fans have got the full backstory of Oscar-nominated Sinners.
