Sam Raimi Clears the Air on Rumors About Spider-Man 4 Villains
Before the cancellation of Sam Raimi‘s Spider-Man 4 years ago, a rumor floated around suggesting that Rachel McAdams was in discussions to play a villain, Black Cat. Now, many years later, Raimi has addressed the rumor. Notably, McAdams herself debunked the rumor years ago.
Sam Raimi on if Rachel McAdams was in talks to play a villain in Spider-Man 4
Sam Raimi recently spoke with CinemaBlend to promote his and Rachel McAdams’ new film, Send Help. During the discussion, the acclaimed filmmaker was asked about an old rumor suggesting McAdams’ involvement in the cancelled Spider-Man 4.
Raimi denied knowledge of this rumor. He also debunked the rumor that suggested the Mean Girls star auditioned to play a villain in the film. “We never had auditions for a female villain that I’m aware of,” he added.
The Evil Dead creator further stated that he had discussions with John Malkovich about playing The Vulture in Spider-Man 4, adding, “He was wonderful, and we got along great. But the movie never went.”
Notably, Raimi’s response to the rumor comes around 16 years after McAdams herself shot down rumors of her involvement in Spider-Man 4. While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the Oscar nominee said, “That’s a total rumor, I have to say. I was hanging out in Toronto the other day, and someone came up to me and said, ‘I just heard you’re doing Spider-Man 4.‘ And I said, ‘Really? No one told me!’ It’s not true” (via Geektyrant).
A representative for Sony Pictures also corroborated McAdams’ statements. They reportedly stated, “It’s an internet rumor, as so many things are these days.”
Recently, Raimi also addressed the prospect of Spider-Man 4’s resurrection and development. While interacting with ScreenRant, the filmmaker said that the canceled film would not re-enter development and production. He stressed that it wouldn’t “be right for [him] to go back and try and resurrect [his] version of this story” since the franchise was focused on getting audiences interested in Tom Holland’s iteration of the character, who will return in July 2026’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
