Zootopia 2 becomes highest grossing Hollywood movie in China
Disney’s Zootopia 2 has delivered a historic performance in the Chinese theatrical market, overtaking Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame to become the top-earning Hollywood release recorded at the Chinese box office.
According to the latest figures, the animated sequel has accumulated $632.2 million in China after 61 days on release. This means it has surpassed Endgame’s record of $632.1 million. The milestone comes after nine consecutive weeks of strong theatrical performance.
China is now one of the largest contributors to the sequel’s international box office take. Zootopia 2 has grossed approximately $1.744 billion worldwide, including $401 million from North America and $624.6 million from Chinese theaters.
Disney Animation chief creative officer Jared Bush previously explained that the company worked closely with regional teams to adapt the script for different audiences. “We’re so lucky that we have collaborators worldwide that could not just translate our jokes and the story, but actually tailor it to the audiences. And so you’ll get a wholesale different pun in different parts of the world that will work for that audience,” he said.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Zootopia 2 has earned strong reviews from critics. It currently holds a 91 percent rating from critics and a 96 percent score from audiences. In the sequel, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are assigned to a complex new case after a mysterious reptile arrives in the city and causes widespread disruption.
With its massive box office success in China and a global take exceeding $1.7 billion, Zootopia 2 has quickly emerged as one of Disney’s most successful animated films ever.
