Following the box office success of The Beekeeper, the sequel moves forward with a clear goal: escalation. The first film followed Adam Clay, a retired assassin who returns to action after a sophisticated phishing scam destroys someone close to him. That revenge-driven premise now evolves into something bigger, with more enemies standing in Clay’s way.
Timo Tjahjanto, who takes over directing duties from David Ayer, teased a dramatic expansion of The Beekeeper 2’s villain lineup. “I personally can’t wait. The script is so great, and there are so many new villains that are coming in the film,” he quipped to The Direct.
He further elaborated, “And a film is always great, because – especially a film like ‘Beekeeper’ – it’s always great because the villain element is going to be so unpredictable and colorful, and that’s what we want to do in the second film.”
With newcomers Yara Shahidi, Pom Klementieff, and Adam Copeland joining returning cast members, the possibilities are wide open. Tjahjanto further teased the stylized nature of these new enemies to MovieWeb, suggesting they would feel like “something out of an anime [or] manga pages.”
The director’s vision for The Beekeeper 2 Jason Statham dynamic is also heavily inspired by a famed comic book avenger. Tjahjanto told ScreenRant he views the character as Statham’s take on The Punisher. “If I can’t make The Punisher film, if the Gods of film aren’t allowing me to do a Punisher film yet, then I’ll turn Adam Clay into my own version of The Punisher,” he stated, adding Statham’s “stoic Frank Castle-esque quality.”
Fans won’t have to wait too long, as The Beekeeper 2’s release date is January 15, 2027.
