Spider-Man 4’s Biggest Change From Last Trilogy Revealed by Director

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy may have offered a fresh yet effective take on the web-slinger, but fans should expect the movies’ tone to change drastically in Part 4, according to director Destin Daniel Cretton. In a recent discussion, the seasoned filmmaker shared his experience in tackling a “new chapter” for Peter Parker, and confirmed that the iconic web-slinger in his film would be different from how he was depicted in previous MCU movies.

How Spider-Man: Brand New Day changes for Peter after first MCU trilogy

During the recent Wonder Man promotional tour, Destin Daniel Cretton noted that the upcoming Spider-Man 4, subtitled Brand New Day, will feature a few changes from its predecessors, specifically when it comes to the movie’s tone.

“All the creatives involved when I came on board wanted to do something that felt different,” Cretton said while speaking with ComicBook. He then added, “Of course, it’s still the Spider-Man that everybody loves, but this is a new chapter in his life, and that tonal shift was something that was really exciting to me. It felt really different, and it was an extremely gratifying experience.”

Notably, Tom Holland’s last appearance in the red-and-blue costume occurred in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. In the movie, after inadvertently endangering the multiverse, Peter asks Doctor Strange to erase his memory from everyone’s mind and reverse the spell that brought the world to the brink of destruction.

As such, Spider-Man: Brand New Day would effectively provide Holland’s web-slinger with a fresh start, which somewhat explains Part 4’s tonal change.

Despite already having helmed 2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the first two episodes of the upcoming Wonder Man series, Destin Daniel Cretton is still enthusiastic about Brand New Day as “directing Spider-Man was one of the roles of a lifetime for me.”

Doubling down on his excitement, the 47-year-old added, “I look at every project that I work on, and it’s really just, I haven’t done this before, is it exciting for me for the next two years? And Spider-Man is definitely that.”

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is currently on track to hit theaters on July 31, 2026.
