Sydney Sweeney Announces New Movie After The Housemaid Success, Role Revealed

Following the success of The Housemaid, star Sydney Sweeney has found her next project.

Paul Feig and Lionsgate’s The Housemade is currently playing in United States theaters. Based on the 2022 novel by Freida McFadden, the film stars Sweeney as Millie Calloway, Amanda Seyfried as Nina Winchester, and Brandon Sklenar as Andrew Winchester. The Housemaid has grossed around $247 million worldwide, and a sequel is now in development.

What movie has Sydney Sweeney been cast in?

Per Variety, Sweeney has been cast in Custom of the Country, which is based on a classic novel by Edith Wharton. Sweeney will also produce the film.

The article states, “Sweeney plays Undine Spragg, an ambitious Midwest woman who attempts to ascend the social ladder in the turn of the century New York. As described in the official press release, Undine Spragg, ‘armed with beauty, daring/hustle and sheer force of will and unwavering ambition, battles an entrenched elite, fearlessly courting controversy, until love and fortune align.’”

The film is written and directed by Josie Rourke, who previously made 2018’s Mary Queen of Scots. Filming is expected to begin “imminently,” though no other casting has yet been announced.

“Edith Wharton’s character has forever fascinated, seduced, and infuriated readers. The Custom of the Country was Wharton’s great American novel and Undine Spragg sweeps across America and through Europe at top speed, during a time of immense economic and social change,” Rourke said in a statement. “The book whistles with modernity and as I was writing this adaptation, Sydney Sweeney lived in my head as this iconic character — it’s as if Wharton sat down a century ago and wrote the role for her.”

Producer Charles Finch added, “I’ve worked for many years to bring Custom of the Country to the screen. I’m delighted with Josie’s adaptation, and the power, passion and fun that Sydney will bring to the role.”

A release date for Custom of the Country has not yet been announced by StudioCanal.
