Superman script reveals Krypto’s dark deleted scene
The officially released Superman screenplay has revealed new details about a notable scene involving Krypto the Superdog that was filmed but ultimately removed from the final cut of the film. The deleted moment helps explain long-standing questions surrounding early promotional material and merchandise related to the Fortress of Solitude.
According to the script, an early version of the film opened at the Fortress of Solitude with a scene involving Krypto the Superdog and a group of abominable snowmen. The description shows Krypto leading Superman through the area after having already killed the creatures, prompting Superman to ask him to stop. While the scene was written and filmed, it was ultimately excluded from the theatrical cut.
The excerpt reads, “Krypto cheerily drags Superman past the corpses of gigantic white kaijus covered in fur, spattered over a few hundred yard radius around the fortress.” Superman then tells him, “Krypto… You need to stop killing… abominable [snowmen].”
The reveal provides context for pre-release toys and marketing images that showed white, fur-covered creatures associated with the Fortress. At the time, fans speculated that a storyline had been cut, as no such characters appeared in the finished film.
Visual effects artist Matthew Eberle previously confirmed that the scene was completed before being discarded during editing. He said, “Originally… when Krypto is dragging Superman, they pass by several dead abominable snowmen. Hit the cutting room floor. I was there” (via Comic Book).
The newly revealed script details show that early drafts of Superman presented a darker and more violent portrayal of Krypto.
