Upcoming Batman Spin-off Movie Won’t Be DCU Canon, James Gunn Reveals
James Gunn recently clarified a rumor about the upcoming animated movie Dynamic Duo.
What did James Gunn say about Dynamic Duo and the DCU?
Dynamic Duo will follow the origins of the two Robins, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, who each went on to become Batman‘s most famous sidekick. Since Dynamic Duo includes Batman characters, there was speculation that the movie would be in the DC Universe. One Threads user asked Gunn about this Dynamic Duo rumor.
Erik Matheus Araujo wrote, “Hey James, is [it] true Dynamic Duo is being rewritten to be part of the DCU?” Gunn responded with, “Nope.” When another Threads user asked about the status of Dynamic Duo, Gunn said, “Really, really well.”
Announced in October 2024, Dynamic Duo is a joint project between DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures Animation. Arthur Mintz will direct the movie. Mintz’ Swaybox, a New Orleans animation studio he started with his wife, Theresa Andersson, will animate Dynamic Duo. Swaybox uses “Momo animation,” a combination of CGI animation, live-action real-time performance, and stop-motion.
Originally, Matthew Aldrich, who co-wrote Pixar’s Coco, had been tapped to pen Dynamic Duo. In September 2025, Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber were brought in to rewrite the script. Neustadter and Weber co-wrote The Disaster Artist and received an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Producers include Gunn and Peter Safran for DC Studios, Andersson for Swaybox Studios, and Matt Reeves for 6th and Idaho. Michael Uslan is an executive producer on the movie.
Despite Reeves’ involvement, Dynamic Duo is not connected to The Batman universe or The Penguin. Since Dynamic Duo is not canon to the DC Universe, it is considered a DC Elseworlds project. Reeves is currently gearing up to film The Batman: Part II.
Dynamic Duo is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 30, 2028.
